The road transport industry is a diverse sector where the human and financial costs of vehicle accidents and safety related incidents are increasing. Ergonomie understands the value of applying a Human Factors approach to road projects.

Technologies like autonomous vehicles and intelligent transport systems are shaking up the way we use our road networks and impacting human behaviour.

Our experience

Ergonomie is experienced in integrating Human Factors methodology into the road transport sector.

By analysing and understanding road user behaviour, we help road authorities, designers and construction companies understand risks that affect both workers and customers when interacting with each other under real traffic conditions.

In line with relevant international standards, we understand the complex nature of state-based and national regulatory requirements. From motorcycles and cars to buses and heavy vehicle goods, we can review equipment, design, processes and management systems.

We apply Human Factors analysis to inform design of road infrastructure and systems.  This helps drive improvements in safety, performance and usability for drivers, passengers, construction and maintenance workers, and the general population.

Areas of work include:

  • Human Factors assurance for major road infrastructure projects

  • Control rooms for road networks

  • Road user behaviour

  • Designing to accommodate autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles and systems

  • Intelligent transport systems

  • Drone studies

  • Innovative traffic controls at worksites

  • Fatigue risk management

  • Incident investigation

  • Design of maintenance facilities & manual handling for maintenance tasks

  • Public safety at level crossings

  • Training & competency for operational roles, e.g. Risk Based Training Needs Analysis (RBTNA)
